You’ve probably seen the big open top double-decker red bus driving around the city exploring Perth and thought it was just for tourists, but when was the last time you explored your own city? Well, that’s exactly what our family did a few weeks ago – and you know what? We live in a beautiful city!
The Perth Explorer runs an amazing hop on/hop off double-decker open-top bus service around Perth City. You can jump on the bus from any of their stops and jump off whenever you like, there are buses passing every hour. It’s a fun way exploring Perth from a position so high you couldn’t possibly see it any other way. From Kings Park to Crown Casino, Elizabeth Quay and the Perth malls – you get to see most of Perth city in an iconic London style tourist bus.
We started our hop on/hop off trip from Kings Park which is a great place to start your journey. The bus driver was helpful and of course, the kids ran straight for the top deck! Driving through Kings Park in the high bus was amazing, we got so close to the trees but the views of the city and the swan river were even more beautiful exploring Perth from that height and above any viewing platform, Kings Park has to offer.
The bus took us around Kings Park for around 10 minutes with 2 pick up stops through the park. We then headed towards West Perth and down to Watertown where it dropped off and picked up more passengers. We remained on the bus until we hit Murray street mall where we picked up some much-needed hats from Target (yep forgot them in our rush to leave the house). We remained in the shopping mall for an hour before the next bus came past for us to catch.
The bus took us around Elizabeth Quay and the bell tower where it dropped off, picked up more people. It then drove around past Northbridge until we hit the Graham Farmer Freeway. The kids loved this part as it was quite windy and obviously we were high above all the cars on the freeway.
We drove up close to the new Perth Stadium (or should that be Optus Stadium) and we were able to have a good look at Perth’s newest sports ground before our destination stop of the Crown Casino. At this point, we jumped off the bus and had some lunch at the Merrywell which is a great place to take the kids if you are ever in the Crown Casino.
We remained at the Casino for 2 hours and then jumped on the next bus back to the city. The bus took us past the WACA and Victoria Gardens. All through the tour, a loudspeaker plays commentary about our city, during this part it was quite interesting as we learnt so much about our city. Including a garden bench located in Victoria Gardens that was part of the Notting Hill movie – turns out someone bought it to propose but was turned down and consequently donated it to the park. We also learned about the buildings around Perth and how they were heavily influenced by London and built by the convicts.
