When I told Ben, my nine-year-old, that we were spending our Saturday morning at Par 3 Indoor Golf in Canning Vale, he was a bit, like: ‘Uh? Wha? Golf?’ And I didn’t have much of a comeback, ‘cos I was thinking, ‘Uh, wha, golf?’ too. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be the place for me. I wasn’t even sure this was going to be the place for Ben, a middle-sized boy with such bad hand-eye coordination that he struggles to brush his own teeth in the mirror.
Nonetheless, we made the long journey to the south of Perth (ALL our best adventures seem to happen south of the river – it’s a thing) and arrived at Par 3 Indoor Golf none the wiser as to what was in store. But then we walked in (as you tend to do in these situations) and Ben’s jaw dropped. Partly because his chums were there – KidzaBoss Bec’s sons Ethan and Jacob – but mainly because they seemed to be playing VIRTUAL SOCCER and VIRTUAL BASKETBALL. I don’t mean on a titchy computer screen, I mean kicking and throwing a REAL ball at a massive, life-size screen. My mind was blown, let alone Ben’s.
(We’d left the little kids at home, by the way. Not home alone, we’re not allowed to do that – but with their nanny and grandad. Par 3 Indoor Golf is great fun, but only for kids over five, I reckon. Any younger than that and they’d just be bored, and probably end up pressing buttons they shouldn’t be pressing. So leave the little ones at home, is my advice … in life, not just in this situation.)
Par 3 indoor Golf, I’ve now discovered, is what’s called a simulation centre. Their two sports simulators offer a dozen different games, including basketball, cricket, NFL, carnival games and the ever-popular zombie dodgeball. The boys were in heaven, being able to alternate between sports and play against each other and set world records (apparently). And yeah, even the grown-ups joined in, and guess what – turns out I’m as bad at virtual soccer as I am at the real-life one. Who knew eh? But what fun!
Next up were the racing car simulators for Ethan and Jacob, and the golf simulator for Ben and the dads. My husband and Bec’s husband (both lovely gentleman) played a proper ‘simulation’ game of golf, and said it was brilliant.
Ben had a one-on-one golf lesson with Justine, the lovely owner of Par 3 Indoor Golf, who’s a bit of a golf pro herself, and offers lessons at the centre. She was incredibly patient and attentive, but Ben was still rubbish (it’s okay, I am too), although he had loads of fun learning.
Sports completed, it was off to the 9D cinema. YES, this was all in the one morning, at the one venue in Canning Vale. Impressive, no? I had reservations about the 9D cinema (that’s NINE DIMENSIONS, friends!). I’m a woos, at heart, and also prone to travel sickness, so given that the 9D cinema provides a rollercoaster experience on moving (MOVING!) seats, thought I’d best sit it out. Ben – who’s also a woos at heart – tried to escape too, but Justine talked us both into staying. Well my friends, I’m glad I did. It was incredible. We – all of us, from the littlest kid up to the biggest grown-up – screamed and giggled and, yes, covered their eyes (okay just me). The whole experience was freaky, but incredible. Pack your Quells though.
If you think that all sounds fantastic, wait until I tell you that there’s a licenced bar and cafe. YES, grown-ups, you can eat, drink AND be merry at Par 3 Indoor Golf. I can’t think of a better place for a boy’s birthday party or grown-up function in Perth. It’d be an absolute blast, and it’s definitely on our list.
